Next time you need some surf-related sportswear look for a retailer that belongs to the SAC (Sustainable Apparel Coalition), this organisation seeks to unite brands, retailers and manufacturers in a collaborative movement towards sustainable fashion. SAC not only works with brands to create better products but also empowers consumers by using a standardised criteria to assess the social and environmental performance of different companies. So before you reach for your wallet *slaps hand away*, ask yourself – do you really need that tiki t-shirt or new polyester swimsuit?
Aside from pointless merchandise, even your surfing essentials can have a marked impact on the environment. A comparative life-cycle analysis by Sustainable Surf showed that an ECOBOARD made with bio-based epoxy resin and recycled materials had a 30% reduced carbon footprint than an ordinary PU (Polyurethane) surfboard.
It doesn’t stop there! Surfers can make better choices in terms of when and where they choose to surf. Globe-trotting to seek out the best possible waves might seem like an attractive prospect – after all who doesn’t fantasise about being whisked away to Hanalei Bay?
