Just Because You’re a Popular Brand Doesn’t Mean You Can Avoid Accountability!

If you’re a Millennial or a member of Gen Z, you most likely owned a pair of UGGs (or several) at one point in your life. I’ve probably owned about 5 or 6 pairs of UGGs in my lifetime, all of which were during my awkward middle school years, and there was one thing I always noticed; how worn out my UGGs would get after only one year of use. 

Albeit, I was 11 and definitely did not take good care of my UGGs. Walking to school in the rain with sheepskin shoes is probably not the best move, but even my “special” UGGs would have to be replaced within two years.

This is where my qualms with UGGs come into play. UGG claims to care about sustainability and the environment, going as far as to cite the SDGs several times on their website, showing that they know what it takes to live in a sustainable world. Actions speak louder than words and as of right now, UGG is all talk.

UGG continues to use harmful chemicals, fossil fuels, chemical adhesives, and harmful dyes in order to make their shoes. Not to mention the fact that UGGs ship their materials from all over the world, which requires even MORE fossil fuels. Oh yeah, and 100% of their shoes end up in a landfill at the end of their lifespan...and considering how short that lifespan is, UGG needs seriously reconsider the materials used in their products.  

UGG is an extremely well-known brand and a cultural phenomenon for people our age. I’ll admit, when I first saw the Yeah Slide Slippers, I kinda wanted a pair, just because they looked comfortable and it would be a little trip down memory lane. But simply put, there are so many other brands that 1. cost less and 2. take sustainability way more seriously. 

UGG has been totally careless with its marketing and production processes and it’s time for them to start making real changes.
