Apart from the fact that we should care about what we put on our bodies, caring about skin care ingredients for the sake of our environment and its sustainability is equally as important. In fact one of the reasons why the Clarifying Cleanser from Face Theory scored so highly is because it does exactly that! The cleanser is free from parabens, silicones, mineral oils, sulfates and PEGs, which is great since they tend to be the most unsustainable ingredients to use in skincare. By excluding these ingredients Face Theory is already showing a great commitment to sustainable formulas!
But why are clean and vegan ingredients so much better than products with parabens, silicones and other harmful ingredients like this?
Well, for starters ingredients such as parabens, silicones, mineral oils and PEGs are often sourced, manufactured and used at the cost of the environment. Take parabens for example: more and more scientific studies are reporting traces of them in the bodies of marine mammals since they're washed into sewage systems and ultimately the environment. It goes without saying that ingredients such as this continue to have long-lasting effects on the environment past their use in the bathroom! Natural ingredients on the other hand are far less likely to harm the animals and plants they come into contact with. And yes, 'far less likely' is much better than definitely harming the environment! It’s safe to say that buying skin care from brands such as Face Theory is more sustainable, as they strictly exclude these types of ingredients.
Also (as if damaging the environment wasn’t enough) ingredients such as the ones mentioned above have been found toxic to the human body. Parabens and formaldehyde releasers are suspected to be cancer-causing agents, so make sure to read the ingredient list before buying any skincare products. Safety first!
Nevertheless, Face Theory could improve by being more transparent about where they source their ingredients from. While they claim that their suppliers are carefully selected and follow sustainable methods, coming clean (haha get it) about those locations would definitely help them become one of the most formidable skin care brands out there. The main reason why this is so important is because clean ingredients don't automatically make a product sustainable. But that’s a story for another time...
