We all know Welch’s Fruit Snacks. Or at least I’ve been aware of them for as long as I can remember. They are a classic snack for kids (or adults) that is somehow not classified as candy and is heavily marketed towards children. This is upsetting to see considering that they are highly processed and contain unsustainable key ingredients.
Excuse me, what?
Turns out, despite their claims of supporting smaller family vineyards, Welch provides us with zero concrete evidence that they support any kind of sustainable farming methods. There is no information provided about fruit sourcing beside vague promises about their grapes. More transparency, please!
In fact, we do know that corn syrup (super unhealthy) and corn starch used in these snacks are not sustainable because of the combination of monoculture, high pesticide usage, water pollution, and soil health depletion that comes with farming corn.
A few of the dyes used in this snack are quite lacking in sustainability as well, namely Red 40 and Blue 1 which are made from coal or petroleum. Ewww, why would they put this in our food?
In addition, gelatin is a major ingredient in this snack and is made from animal tendons, ligaments, tissues, and bones. This means that Welch’s Fruit Snacks contribute to the deforestation and ecological devastation that comes with supporting cows and pigs (the animals that they say they source their gelatin from).
When it comes to flavoring, the label says “natural and artificial flavors” which is nowhere near specific enough. Again, transparency is key and we just aren’t getting it here.
On top of all these unsustainable and unhealthy ingredients, Welch has no made any commitment to improving their sustainability by switching to renewable energy sources. At this point in the climate crisis, this kind of commitment is the bare minimum. I hope that this company improves their sustainability goals and transparency. Until then, my taste for Welch’s Fruit Snacks is pretty dried up.
