Converse has provided the bare minimum information about their shoe and does not seem that they value sustainability at all. I couldn’t really find anything about this shoe that implemented any thought of sustainability. I would like to see more transparency about all aspects of this shoe from Converse.

what it's made of:

The classic Chuck Taylor high top converse are made from canvas material and vulcanized rubber. All these materials are virgin, they aren’t recycled. There is not a lot of information available on the Converse website on what the shoe is exactly made of.

how it's made:

Converse were made in the US until they went bankrupt in 2001, then Nike bought Converse and began manufacturing them. Converse shoes are now made in multiple different countries that have cheaper labor. Early manufacturing is not very transparent so a lot is unknown about how these shoes are made.

The people who put in the labor to produce these shoes are paid minimum wages, but that doesn’t always mean that these are living wages. This is not good news, especially since a lot of the labor is outsourced to poor countries where their minimum wage is not up to a living wage. Converse has been owned by Nike since 2003, which allowed Converse to have a global reach. Nike has also put out greenhouse gas emissions goals that are very ambitious for the industry. They want to reduce their emissions by over 50% in 2025. Although these are great goals, there is no data to see if the goal is actually being met.
