While they have definitely made efforts to be more sustainable, the product does get a rating of 1.25 planets considering the efforts of the parent company and the fact that the sustainable alternatives are not widely available. Sunscreen is something that should not have harmful ingredients, since it is often worn at the beach and directly affects ocean and plant life.

what it's made of:

0.5

The website lists the active ingredients as: AVOBENZONE 3% • HOMOSALATE 15% • OCTISALATE 5% • OCTOCRYLENE 7%. There are many more ingredients, all inactive, such as Avobenzone has been reported as not safe for marine and plant life, since its a petrochemical that increases rates of coral bleaching. This brand also uses the maximum amount of Homosalate and other ingredients as allowed in the United States, which are far above the European Commission recommendations. So, they get a rating of 0.5 planets, since the ingredients listed as active are not environmentally-friendly and they have made no efforts nor claims to modify the ingredients.

The packaging is plastic and not recyclable, thus not environmentally friendly. However, recent news from the company has been that a new wave of sustainability is coming to the packaging, with a new launch of cardboard tubes. While still not recyclable, they do have a remarkably low carbon footprint as compared to similar products from competitors and their own brand. However, these tubes are not yet widely available or offered in most retail stores.

All products are tested by dermatologists and by using clinical trials. The products are made using spring water from La Roche-Posay, France. The products are also manufactured in France. The brand states that they do not test any products on animals unless required to do so by law, but they are owned by L’oreal which is not cruelty free. For this, they get a rating of 1 planet since they are not cruelty free and cannot be so while under the parent company, however, they do not manufacture internationally and it does not seem like they engage in any unfair or unlawful labor practices. However, they do have plans to move towards sustainable packaging, so hopefully in the next few years they will be a more sustainable brand as a whole.

The brand La Roche-Posay operates under a parent company, L’oreal. This brand, while not cruelty free is making steps to be more sustainable. By the end of 2020, they had 72 carbon neutral sites and reduced carbon emissions by 81%. Along with this, they are very transparent about what they are doing, what their goals are, and the data on how they are achieving those goals. So, I would give them 2 planets, since it seems like they have strong goals and solid plans to reach those goals.
