Laneige’s Lip Sleeping Mask is an effective product for lip hydration. However, after reviewing the information on the product, it is quite clear that this product is not sustainable. The ingredients are not organic, and the company is not clear if they are responsibly sourced as well. The brand is not cruelty-free or vegan as it is complicit with animal testing. The container is made of plastic and is not made of recycled materials and the brand still uses outer packaging on its products. The parent company of the product, Amorepacific is ranked #11 in beauty sales by Beauty Packing. The company made $5.7 billion in sales, which is almost a full billion dollars growth from its 2019 sales of $4.8 billion. Thus, it is extremely worrying that such a rapidly growing group that sells globally is not making concrete efforts to be more sustainable. Amorepacific does claim it is striving to be more sustainable and gives sustainability reports, however, its main initiatives are vague. There are certainly more sustainable lip products out there that are cruelty-free, vegan, has responsibly sourced materials, and are zero-waste. I recommend products from brands like, Dab Herb, Dirty Hippie Cosmetics, and Rainwater Botanicals. In my opinion, Laneige and Amorepacific need to seriously re-evaluate its sustainability goals and need significant divestment if both companies decide to conduct “business as usual”.
The Laneige lip sleeping mask Berry Mix Complex, is made of vitamin C, and has a mix of raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, goji berries, and blueberries. The extended ingredients list contains nothing out of the ordinary for a lip balm like this. The product is not cruelty-free, and not organic. The product is technically vegan, however, since they are complicit with the animal testing of their products I wouldn’t consider the product or Laneige in general in be vegan either. I find it quite strange that a product which has one many beauty awards, like the 2019 Allure Best of Beauty, is not at least cruelty-free. The container of the product is made of plastic, however the Laneige website does not claim that the product is recyclable.
Neithor Laneige nor its parent company Amorepacific are very transparent on the manufacturing process of their products. Since the product is just a balm, I would infer that at the production sites, large drums of the various ingredients are mixed together through various heating and cooling processes. Then the final mixture is poured into the individual containers through a mechanized process. Coupling this process with the fact that Laneige sells its products globally, it is obvious the brand and its products have a large carbon footprint. Additionally, Laneige engages in animal testing by allowing its products to be animal-tested. The brand sells its products in stores in mainland China under conditions where animal testing is still legally required. As a result, Laneige must consent and pay to have their products tested on animals. Which is why most cosmetics brands selling in mainland China stores cannot be considered cruelty-free.
The product is made by the Korean cosmetics brand Laneige. In terms of their sustainability efforts, Laneige has launched the Rescue Walter Campaign. The campaign aims to prevent water shortages and water pollution. In addition, since its 2010 launch, Laneige’s ‘Waterful Sharing’ campaign has reached out to children suffering from water scarcity by supplying clean water and improving education environment to support their healthy lives. Laneige’s parent company, Amorepacific has also laid out some of its sustainability goals and initiatives. For example, they want to reduce their Co2 emissions by 30 percent per tons of production, compared to their 2015 tons. However, they do not give a target date of when they want to achieve this. The Amorepacific group also intends to expand the application of its low-energy emulsification process. Cosmetic ingredients have different water solubility and oil solubility properties that makes it difficult to blend or mix at low temperatures. Thus, a product requires a process of melting various ingredients at high temperatures followed by a cooling process. However, generating high temperatures and then to cool the temperatures require a lot of energy. Since 2014, Amorepacific Group has continued to study the process of low-energy emulsification to mix different ingredients at low temperatures. Each year, the number of facilities and products that adopt this process has increased. However, they do not provide a list of production sites that use this process or which products use this process either. I think Amorepacific is quite transparent for such a large cosmetics brand, however the claims the company makes are vague and have little concrete evidence. Also, I do applaud the initiatives made by Laneige themselves for combating water pollution and water scarcity. However, the company is still not cruelty-free or uses responsibly sourced ingredients.
