Nécessaire has made great strides towards sustainability, in a wide variety of aspects. Their products are sourced responsibly and their packaging, down to the ink, is 100% recyclable and produced locally in Los Angeles. While the brand has been very transparent and successful in reaching sustainable goals, it comes at a small cost.
Their products tend to be on the pricier side for beauty products but I think it is well worth the costs in terms of the efforts they put towards making their company sustainable. They also explore future sustainable targets and goals for the future. On their website they state that the company is working to only use repurpose plastics and other materials in the packaging of their products and that they wanted to repurpose the plastic waste they have in an effort to reduce the production of new plastics. In addition to working on sustainability objectives, they also work towards inclusivity. They create products for all ages, genders and people alike, by providing open platforms to encourage a community for users and consumers alike!
The main ingredients in Nécessaire Deodorant are water, tapioca starch, castor oil, shea butter, lactic acid and a variety of alcohols. The tapioca starch and castor oil, along with many of the ingredients, are non-GMO meaning they have not been genetically modified. The additional ingredients are either vegan, come from a sustainable palm source, or non-nano (meaning the particles are not small enough to penetrate the skin). They pride themselves on having no parabens, sulfates, silicones, synthetic fragrances or synthetic dyes in their products. On the site, each product has its own measured pH level. This product formula has a pH level of 3.5 to 4.5, meaning it has a relatively low and neutral acidity, retaining the activity of the ingredients without compromising the effect it has on your skin.
In addition to the sustainability of its sources, the packaging of the Nécessaire Deodorant is 100% recyclable. The boxes in which it is packaged are made of 100% recyclable materials and 100% post consumer waste (meaning plastic that was used, discarded, cleaned, and repurposed). I was very surprised to learn that even the ink on the packaging is 100% recycled!
All of the Nécessaire products, including the deodorant, are designed, tested and produced in the United States. They are manufactured at FDA and NSF certified manufacturers. The packaging is made in collaboration with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified vendors. The FSC is an international organization that certifies products that source forest products such as wood, paper and other forest products responsibly. They also do not use “virgin forest materials”, or materials from forests that are in their naturalist form and have little human encroachment.
In 2019 the brand also became certified as carbon neutral. They measure the greenhouse gases emitted in the making and delivery of their products and offset their carbon footprint of 2,634 metric tonnes CO2. They are continuing to offset their 2020 emissions by improving transportation within the United States.
Nécessaire is a beauty and personal care product company founded by Randi Christiansen and Nick Axelrod in 2017. They started with a launch of only three products and have grown to provide a much wider range while still remaining an independent beauty brand. Nécessaire also took a 2020 pledge to donate 1% of their revenue to environmental causes.
