The OGX renewing Argan Oil is a relatively affordable option providing customers with sulfate and paraben-free product. The company markets its products to appear organic, but many of the ingredients are synthetic. Argan Oil is the most problematic ingredient. The process in which it is produced degrades soil quality and contributes to deforestation in Morocco. The production process is not straightforward as OGX lacks transparency. The company has many sustainable initiatives, including short-term and long-term plans. It seems that the company is aware of its impact and working to change its practices. However, the environmentally degrading ingredients and lack of transparency with their current practices require improvement.

what it's made of:

Cyclopentasiloxane, cyclotetrasiloxane, dimethiconol, argan kernel oil, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, fragrance, red 17, yellow 11, Ci 47000, benzyl benzoate Although this product is marketed as organic, the ingredients are synthetic. Ingredients like Cyclopentasiloxane and Cyclopentasiloxane are cheaper alternatives for organic materials and often used as an alternative to cut costs. Dimethiconol is a silicon-based product used to keep in moisture, which blocks your skin from absorption. The most problematic ingredient of all is argan oil. Argan trees produce fruit with oil-rich kernels inside. Since argan oil is in such high demand, the production rate is increasing at an alarming rate. The increased production rate has resulted in aggressive deforestation and harvesting. This process causes a ripple of environmental effects since Argan trees take up carbon dioxide and prevent soil erosion.

Despite the Organix name, this product does not include any organic ingredients. This is a prime example of greenwashing as the company is attempting to trick consumers into thinking they are an environmentally conscious brand. This company was even involved in lawsuits with the Center for Environmental health in 2011 for misleading labels. The OGX Company boasts its commitment to the planet with sustainability goals, but the current execution is lacking. However, the OGX Company does outline promising initiatives currently in place. A formula free of microbeads as well as silicone and colorant-free products can be found on their website. For future initiatives, OGX is planning to eliminate black plastic by 2022 and have 100% recyclable bottles by 2025.
