Gojo has started working towards some important sustainability initiatives, as well as creating certain products that are “certified green”. However, many of the ingredients in this particular product are not sustainable or are harmful to the environment, despite their sustainability efforts. In addition, I would also like to see them move all of their products to their green line, since it appears that they have the ability to do so.
The active ingredient in the product is ethyl alcohol (70%), and the majority of the inactive ingredients are other alcohols and chemicals. They also include a lot of artificial perfumes to create scented sanitizer.
Purell’s parent company, Gojo, does not have much transparency about their production process for their products, which causes them to decrease their rating for this section.
Purell is owned by Gojo, and this parent company has taken on some sustainability initiatives, including reducing their chemical footprint by 50%, reducing packaging material by 15%, reuse or recycling 50% of dispenser materials, and more to foster sustainability within the company. They also have created green versions of some of their products made with “naturally renewing ethanol.”
