A lot of people prefer plant based vegan milk instead of dairy to reduce the detrimental effects dairy has on the planet. The almond milk produced by Silk is one of the most popular brands in the market today.

I would rate this product a 1.5/3. They have some great initiatives in place with regard to protecting the bees, reduced water footprint, and recyclable packaging.
But at the end of the day, it boils down to how almond milk in general is not a very sustainable option compared to the other plant based options. Oats is the most sustainable option, and if sustainability is your priority I would suggest exploring other plant based milk options like oats/coconut/soy.

what it's made of:

1

It’s free from dairy, gluten, cholesterol, artificial colors and flavors.
Great source of calcium and vitamin D!
Ingredients-
Almond milk (Filtered Water, Almonds), Cane Sugar, Vitamin and Mineral Blend (Calcium Carbonate, Vitamin E Acetate, Vitamin A Palmitate, Vitamin D2), Sea Salt, Gellan Gum, Sunflower Lecithin, Locust Bean Gum, Ascorbic Acid (to protect freshness), Natural Flavor.

The list of ingredients seem pretty reasonable, the only thing I’m unsure about is the amount of almond they’re using in the production of this milk.
From a sustainability stand point, although plant based milk has much lesser water footprint than dairy milk overusing almonds has led to an increased demand for the production. This has had severe effects on the bee population because bees are used for pollination while growing almond.

how it's made:

1.5

The website mentions that making a half gallon of Silk takes 80% less water than a half gallon of dairy milk, but I’m slightly skeptical since almonds need a lot of water to grow (1 almond - 1.1 gallons)!
The company also participates in and promotes sustainability campaigns to compensate for the water used for almond cultivation. (It’s a great idea, but one can’t unsee the enormous amount of water it takes up)

Initiatives:

  • Support a groundwater recharge program in drought-stricken California
  • Partnered with Change the Course to help preserve the ecological health of the Colorado River basin.
  • They support pollinators and bees, by planting more than 25 linear miles of drought-resistant, flowering, native California hedgerow plants on the orchards.

Packaging - They are working towards using paperboard for making their cartons, and it’s certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and the Rain-forest Alliance. The cartons are also recyclable, and the instructions are mentioned clearly at the back of the carton!

who makes it:

The company that manufactures this product, Silk believes in plant based, non genetically modified products. They have a large variety of plant based produce to choose from!
The motto is  purpose is progress, and that kind of struck a chord with me. They know they are not  completely sustainable yet, but they’re taking initiates towards incorporating it and that’s a great start in my opinion.
