The OGX weightless hydration coconut water shampoo is a relatively affordable option providing customers with sulfate and paraben-free product. This company is known for marketing its products as organic, but many of the ingredients are synthetic. Coconut Oil is by far the most problematic ingredient. The process in which it is produced decreases animal and plant diversity through harmful farming practices like monocropping. The production process is not straightforward as OGX lacks transparency. The company has many sustainable initiatives, including short-term and long-term plans. The website claims to understand its impact and have global awareness, but there is has been little change in ingredient sourcing, transparency, and packaging to reflect this. Therefore it is no surprise that their current environmentally degrading practices, large carbon footprint, and lack of transparency earn them a low rating.

what it's made of:

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate, PPG-2 Hydroxyethyl Coco/Isostearamide, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut), Water, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Polyquaternium-10, PEG-150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate, PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, Sodium Chloride, Citric Acid, Tetrasodium EDTA, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Fragrance (Parfum), Ext. Violet 2 (CI 60730) This product is marketed to hydrate and transform dry hair with coconut oil and electrolytes. Ingredients like Cyclopentasiloxane and Cyclopentasiloxane are cheaper alternatives for organic materials and often used as an alternative to cut costs. The fragrance added to this product is the most harmful ingredient used, causing moderate irritation and endocrine disruption. When endocrine disruptors persist in the environment, they interfere with critical biological functions and be detrimental to ecosystems. However, these effects are only seen when the chemical is applied in large quantities and the fragrance is added at a relatively low concentration. The most problematic ingredient of all is coconut oil. The production of coconut oil requires many fertilizers that persist in the environment and affect nearby ecosystems. Since coconut oil is in such high demand, the production rate is increasing at an alarming rate. The increased production rate has resulted in aggressive harvesting and harmful agricultural practices like monoculture farming. This process causes a ripple of environmental effects by replacing native plants and decreasing biodiversity.

how it's made:

There is little public information regarding the production process of this product. While OGX is transparent about its ingredients, there is little information on the techniques used. Without this information, it isn't easy to analyze the environmental impact of this product.

who makes it:

Despite the Organix name, this product does not include any organic ingredients. This is a prime example of greenwashing as the company is attempting to trick consumers into thinking they are an environmentally conscious brand. This company was even involved in lawsuits with the Center for Environmental health in 2011 for misleading labels. The OGX Company boasts its commitment to the planet with sustainability goals, but the current execution is lacking. However, the OGX Company does outline promising initiatives currently in place. A formula free of microbeads as well as silicone and colorant-free products can be found on their website. For future initiatives, OGX is planning to eliminate black plastic by 2022 and have 100% recyclable bottles by 2025.
