I love that all of their packaging is recyclable and the bottles are recyclable or reusable since they’re glass. I wish YTTP had more information on where they get there ingredients from and the labor practices they have. Personally, I have wanted to try this cleanser for a long time after hearing about the benefits of the ingredients. Although it is a bit pricy at $36, I think the product could last a while if only 1 or 2 pumps are used each time.
There is no animal testing, parabens, phthalates, or sulfates. All of the ingredients are vegan. All of their products follow the EU’s guidelines on restricted ingredients in cosmetics which is good as the EU has stricter regulations than the US. Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Panthenol (Vitamin B5), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Butylene Glycol, Brassica Oleracea (Kale) Leaf Extract, Spinacia Oleracea (Spinach) Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Medicago Sativa (Alfalfa) Extract, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Extract, Natural Fragrance, Lecithin, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Chlorophyll Two of the ingredients (Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine) can be derived from coconut oil. Coconuts are grown in Indonesia and the Philippines and often workers are not paid living wages. Because there is more demand for coconut oil now, pesticides can be used and this can be environmentally harmful. However, coconut oil is a better alternative to palm oil as palm oil can lead to deforestation. Transporting this ingredient across the world to California would also result in high emissions. Youth to the People should be more transparent about where they are sourcing their ingredients from and what the supply chain is like. Are the other chemicals made in the lab? The cleanser comes in a glass bottle which is recyclable. Glass also doesn’t contain plasticizers (they increase elasticity of a material) which can leak into the product later on and can cause cancer. Its packaging comes in the form of recyclable paper boxes.
To make sure everything is cruelty-free, the company audits their partners and research their ingredients to uphold this standard. All of the formulas are made locally in California. The packaging is also made and printed there. They use FSC-Certified Kraft Paper from Neenah, Inc. to make the boxes. Neenah, Inc.‘s paper mill in Wisconsin was the first mill to offer FSC-certified paper. They make sure they source pulp or other forest products from sustainably managed forests with third-party certification such as the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC). The papers are also made with 100% renewable electricity. For printing, Youth to the People uses Colitho which is based in Concord, California. Colitho recycles all paper waste, corrugated material, aluminum, wood, ink and chemicals used for production and they are also FSC-certified. However, it’s notable that FSC has had scandals about covering up illegal logging. The glass bottles are made by Heinz, a German glass manufacturer known for their sustainability. For the most part, the cleanser’s packaging is sourced from places in the US, meaning less transportation emissions. The company also debuted a 16 oz size of the Superfood Cleanser for $64 this year. It is meant for refilling empty 8 oz bottles. This is shipped without a pump so people can reuse the old pump. The bigger size also means less packaging is used, shipped, and wasted/recycled over time.
Greg Gonzales and Joe Cloyes are the founders of Youth to the People. YTTP is a family-owned business with a team of 60 full-time and part-time employees, interns, and contractors. The Leadership team consists of 8 people (1 Asian, 1 Middle Eastern, 1 is two or more races). YTTP has said that they will increase their Black representation on the Leadership team and launch an internal diversity and inclusion coalition as well as bringing in a diversity consultant to educate their team about racism at all levels and how to do better for their fellow BIPOC. Hopefully, they will actually do this. Mercedes Taylor is YTTP’s Product Innovation Manager who’s background is in Analytical Chemistry. She helps R&D formulas along with focusing on sustainability. I would also like to know how workers are treated in their ingredient supply chain if the ingredients are globally sourced. YTTP also has a “Giving arm” dedicated to partnering with organizations to create change. In 2019 for Pride Month, YTTP donated $50,000 using 100% of profits from their Superfood Cleanser Pride Edition to GLSEN, which works to ensure that LGBTQ students are safe and included in schools and education. YTTP also partners with the Downtown Women’s Center in Los Angeles which helps women living in homelessness or transitioning out of homelessness. They have made toiletry kits and socks and collected donations for the DWC.
